2023-03-30 14:05:25 - Amandalynn Danielle Green <agreen87>
The student would like the department to consider evaluating the course as a CHIN 1501 or, if applicable, a Chinese Literature course. The student is seeking Humanities credit. Thanks for your reconsideration concerning this matter.

Thank you for taking the time to review my request for a transfer credit evaluation for the Chinese course I took at National Taiwan University. I appreciate your input that there is no appropriate equivalent course at the 1000 or 2000 level offered by the Chinese program at Georgia Tech. However, I wanted to inquire if it would be possible to evaluate the course to something more advanced, such as CHIN 3XXX or CHIN 4XXX.

There is no appropriate equivalent course at 1000 or 2000 level offered by the Chinese program. The evaluated course is taught in Chinese on the topic of classical Chinese literature, for Chinese native speakers, but our 1000 and 2000 courses are language-oriented for non-native speakers.

Can you review for CHIN 1X02 or other advanced Chinese course per student request?

I've included my response in another note. Thanks!

Hi! I learned from my adviosr that language courses at 1001 level cannot be counted toward Humanities requireent. However 1002 or above can. Therefore I'm my advisor suggested me to submit this evaluation to see if this course from National Taiwan University (NTU) can be evaluated as CHIN 1002 or above so that it can satisfy Humanities requireent. Addtionally, although CHIN 1081 is a 1 level course at NTU, it actually covered advanced Chinese literature since it's targeted toward native speakers.

First level languages do not carry a Humanities Attribute. Unfortunately, this course cannot count toward that requirement. Please speak with your Major School Academic Advisor for assistance with satisfying any outlying Humanities you need.

Or, if it could be evaluated to CHIN 10X2 or something higher than 1002 level so that it could fulfill humanities requirement would be great too.

I didn't submit an evaluation for this course when I was admitted to Tech. And it got automatically evaluated to CHIN 10x1, which doesn't seem to be eligible to fulfill Humanities requirements by itself. But the content covered in this course went far beyond elementary/intermediate Chinese taught in CHIN 1000 or 2000 level courses at Tech. It's about classical literature, especially Classic Chinese Novels, and writing novels. Think about it like covering The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway, or Pride and Prejudice by Austen for American students.
