I am requesting consideration for exemption from CS 1100 – Freshman Leap Seminar based on an equivalent first-year seminar I completed at the University of Georgia (FYOS). UGA’s FYOS is a 1-credit, discussion-based freshman seminar designed to introduce first-year students to foundational academic topics and encourage engagement through presentations, participation, and faculty-led discussions—closely matching the structure and intent of GT’s CS 1100. My FYOS course focused specifically on computing-related foundations. Over 13 sessions, grading was based entirely on participation and presentations (no exams). Six instructor-led sessions introduced major computing topics, including: Components of a typical computer Processor design and limitations Computer graphics & image processing Artificial intelligence Algorithms & computational efficiency Social networks & data science Additionally, 7 sessions were student presentation–based, similar to GT’s emphasis on small-group engagement, discussion, and topical exploration for first-year computationalists. Because the professor who taught this course has retired, it is difficult to obtain a newly formatted syllabus. However, the information above comes directly from the instructor’s course description, which I have attached in my documentation. Given the overlap in structure, intent, and computing-focused foundational content, I respectfully request that this FYOS seminar be evaluated as fulfilling the spirit and requirements of CS 1100 – Freshman Leap Seminar.
